Campaign to Ban Fossil Fuel Advertising

The CEU is proud to be among the founding members of a new campaign to ban fossil fuel advertising in Canada.

Led by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), this national campaign aims to reduce carbon emissions and traffic-related air pollution leading to healthier communities. Just as earlier movements, led by health professionals, successfully mobilized to ban cigarette advertising, this campaign seeks to bring together a wide coalition of actors to make the case for a national ban on the advertising of fossil fuel vehicles, gas stations, and gas products and an end to fossil fuel sponsorship of sports and cultural events.

Why do we permit ads for the fossil fuel products we know to be a civilizational threat?

These ads send a message, even if we don’t buy the specific product they are selling. They normalize what must now be wound down and encourage young people in particular to idealize these products and the lifestyles they promote. In a time of climate emergency, these ads send a contradictory and confusing message. That needs to end.
